East Timor Food
The East Timorese eat three meals per day. Breakfasts are lights, lunch is the main meal and dinner is medium sized. People eat with a spoon in the right hand and a fork in the left hand. Rice is the main staple, cassava, potatoes, sweet potatoes, corn yams and bread fruit are also foods the East Timor's eat. Urban's might eat bread for breakfast and cassava and sweet potatoes are common as well. Modo- fila (stir fry vegetables) and salad is usually served for lunch. Aswell as feijoda, a soup made of real kidney beans. Rural people eat a batar-dan. Typical vegetables include, leaf vegetables, kanlau- a spinach like plant, watercress, green beans, cabbage, eggplant, tomatoes, onions, and cucumbers. Fish is common, pork, chicken, beef and got is eaten. Tofu and tempeh( soy bean based on the Indonesians). Dog meat is a favorite dish for many on a special occasion. Fruits include banana, mangoes, pineapples, oranges, grapefruits, passion fruits and local varieties such as ai-daad, a type of liten.
East Timor Music
East Timor's traditional music includes the lakadou ( a bamboo instrument played by men) The baba-dook( an ensemble of drums and bronze gongs played by women). These instruments are played at national celebrations such as Independence Day and at ceremonies like Inauguration of Lulik. Guitars are also played widely. Popular music blends traditional style, love songs, and international rock. A favorite of many is the traditional dance, which is the idu. It is performed by a group of dancers dressed in sarongs made of of tais. ( a brightly colored cloth made or hand woven cotton.) They make a range of handcrafts from local materials such as palm leaves, bamboo, rattan and sandal wood.

Urban men and women generally wear western style clothes. Formal occasions such as a church service, men wear pants and short sleeved shirts while women wear blouses or dresses and high heeled shoes. Usually people wear jeans and shirts. Ties are uncommon, the only day the men will wear a tie is on wedding day. Hats on a sunny days are usual. The East Timorese discourage revealing clothing though shorts and strapless tops are developing in Dili for women. People in rural areas are more likely to wear traditional clothes. Men wear shirts with a lipa, a type of sarong. Women wear a lipa and a kabia a long sleeved blouse pinned together in the front.
